Our
Purpose in Sponsoring These Games
The I.O. Silver Games was started in
1996 after the December 1995 death of one of Central Pennsylvania's most
outstanding individuals, I.O. Silver, MD. Our idea was to honor the life
of Dr. I.O. Silver and, at the same time, help fight the disease that took him
from us.
Heart disease accounts for 47% of all
deaths. It is our nation's #1 killer. Deaths from all other diseases
in the world added together equal the number of deaths from heart disease.
In our short 5 year history, we have donated over
$200,000 to our cause. In the Year 2000 we turned over in excess of
$90,000. All funds go to the I.O. Silver Cardiovascular Specialties Clinic
of Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA. In
the past two years, the doctors and staff of the I.O. Silver Cardiovascular Specialties
Clinic have:
- Performed the first
robotically-assisted coronary bypass operation in America. Called by
many the dawn of a new era in heart surgery, the procedure allows bypass
surgery to be accomplished withoutng the chest, but rather working
through small puncture wounds the size of a pencil width;
- Designed and implanted the Arrow
Lionheart, a permanent electric pump designed to help the sick heart
beat. It was specifically designed for very sick people who are
generally over age 65 - the usual cutoff age for heart transplant - and for
whom heart medication is ineffective. Health experts say 40,000
patients a year could benefit from this new device.
We are asking you, the members of our
community, to kindly and generously support our effort in this war against heart
disease by donating to the I.O. Silver Games. Contribution may be sent
to: 4277 Beaufort Hunt Drive, Harrisburg, PA 17110
